On Wednesday, Nov. 30, Chancellor Wendell E. Pritchett and Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Kriste Lindenmeyer hosted a standing-room-only crowd for a special evening celebrating achievement and research at Rutgers–Camden.

"'You Just Won a MacArthur!' A Conversation About Striving for Excellence" featured Jacob Soll, a Rutgers–Camden professor of history and winner of the 2011 MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellowship, and Richard Aregood CCAS '65, winner of the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing.

In September 2011, Jacob Soll became the first Rutgers–Camden scholar ever to command the prestigious honor of being named a MacArthur Fellow. This highly competitive fellowship – known popularly as the "Genius Grant" – celebrates individuals who show exemplary creativity in their work and the potential for still more in the future.

Dr. Soll has earned an international reputation for his incisive insights into the histories of the birth of information culture in the European tradition, mixing the histories of science, finance, libraries, and politics. His current research examines the role of accounting in the rise and crises of the modern state from Renaissance Italy to modern day Wall Street, as well as the role of libraries in the birth of political liberty and state-building.

During their candid and wide-ranging discussion, Dr. Soll and Prof. Aregood explored the history of accounting, the rise of information gathering, the challenges and rewards of research, the exceptional attributes of Rutgers–Camden, and much more.
